WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The defeat of Republican candidate Walker in the Senate run-off in the southern US state of Georgia is likely to intensify the backlash against former President Donald Trump.
Mr. Trump, who announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, was criticized for dinner with an anti-Semite, and a family-run company was found guilty of tax evasion. Dark clouds hang in the horizon. "America is in trouble. Oh my God!" Mr. Trump posted on the exchange site late at night on the 6th when Mr. Walker's defeat was reported.
Walker, who was a star player in the US National Football League (NFL), passed the primary on Trump's endorsement. During the campaign, however, it was reported that Walker, who was supposed to be against abortion, paid a woman for an abortion in the past.
In addition, he was constantly subjected to scandals such as domestic violence, and he was continuously questioned for his qualifications, saying that he "cannot be a senator" (former President Obama). By contrast, Gov. Kemp, a Republican who split with Trump, won re-election by a wide margin in the last midterm election.
In 2020, Mr. Kemp's relationship soured when Mr. Trump refused to overturn the election results. In the midterm elections, Trump-backed candidates lost out in pennsylvania, Nevada, and other battleground states for the Senate, prompting criticism of Trump's responsibility within the Republican Party. Mr. Trump avoided going to Georgia to fend off criticism, but he could not turn the tide. No chance of recovery for the presidential nomination is yet in sight.
